LIEUTENANT GENERAL FRANK E. PETERSEN, USMC (RET)***

The General is a veteran of aerial combat in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.   The General made Marine Corps history by becoming the Marine Corp's first rated aviator of African /American ancestry.  The General made further history by becoming the first Marine officer of African / American heritage to be  promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.   During the Korean War, the General flew 60 aerial combat missions in the specialized ground-attack version of the Chance Vought F4U Corsair.  During the Vietnam War, the General flew 200 aerial combat missions in the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, while commanding Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-314.  Following his service in southeast Asia, the General served in a number of important air and ground command position, culminating in the command of the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia.
