REAR ADMIRAL GEORGE M. “SKIP” FURLONG, JR., USN

Following several years of enlisted service, Rear Admiral George M. (Skip) Furlong, Jr., attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated with honors in 1956.  He was designated a Naval Aviator and received his wings in July 1957.  During his 37 year Navy career he served in shore and sea billets of increasing responsibility including command of a fighter squadron, attack carrier air wing, a fleet oiler and the aircraft carrier USS INDEPENDENCE CVN-65.  He served as Chief of Staff, U.S. Sixth Fleet and Commander Fighter Airborne Early Warning Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet.  His last active duty assignment was as Deputy Chief of Naval Education and training headquartered at the Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.  Upon retirement from the Navy on January 1, 1986, he assumed the position of Executive Vice President of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, the civilian support arm of the National Museum of Naval Aviation located in Pensacola.  Currently, the Admiral continues to serve as a Vice President of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation and is playing a major role in the development of the National Flight Academy which is being developed in conjunction with the expansion of the Naval Aviation Museum.
